Unselfish Sharing, Selfish Learning & Knowledge Pools

Every coach around the world draws on knowledge from a variety of “knowledge pools”. This includes their own sporting & life experiences, players, role models and coaching colleagues (to name a few).

Drawing on the collective knowledge from the coaching community can be one of the most rewarding pools, as it can influence a coaches current and future decision making and overall growth.

Our colleagues can provide exemplars of success, best-practise models, brutally honest feedback, new challenges and validations of current approaches. However while absorbing and processing these insights, opinions, and strategies it is most important for coaches to be SELFISH in their prioritisation and application of this knowledge.

Influencing factors like the your players age & abilities, and environmental factors such as competition structure, season length, and resource access should help influence and guide your decisions around applying any new approaches with your team.

One of our biggest challenges as coaches is trying to wade through the myriad of information that is available in both formal and organic learning contexts.

My best advice is to be open to absorbing new information but SELFISH with your investment of time and targeted in the streams of information available.

All the best with your on-going learning and coaching journey.
